A Bit of HistoryThe Aborigines stayed in caves -- so can you, with "most modern conveniences". The first traveller's accommodation in the Blue Mountains was provided by the military depot near Glenbrook Lagoon in 1815; subsequently re-located to Springwood the next year. A traveller's diary tells of a most unpleasant night spent there! The same year, Cox's "Weatherboard Hut" store opened at Wentworth Falls. "Collitts Inn" was established in Hartley Vale in 1823, whilst in 1827 "James' Hut" opened at Woodford and the "Weatherboard Inn" raised the standard at Wentworth Falls. By 1835, the list had grown to include James Evans' "Pilgrim Inn" at Mt Sion (Glenbrook); the "Valley Inn" at Valley Heights; "Woodman's Inn" at Woodford, (later Buss's Inn & now Woodford Academy, oldest building in the Blue Mountains); "Pembroke's Hut" at Lawson; "Shepherd and His Flock Inn" west of Katoomba; & Andrew Gardener's "Scotch Thistle Inn" at Blackheath. Australia's first tourist hotel was established in the Blue Mountains in 1878. As the popularity of the area grew, it was joined by more hotels, guesthouses, and sanatoriums. Accommodation TodayToday the Blue Mountains offers a wide range of accommodation, much of it being in beautifully restored historic buildings. Log fires, country & period furnishings, mountain gardens & views are often available. So is a cave. Resort-style accommodation, & conference facilities, are also available. |
